There are seven County Council positions.

Job Overview

  • Fixed term of four years, but is unlimited

Job Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen 21 years of age or older at the time of assuming office

  • Must be and remain a current resident of Hancock County

Responsibilities

  • Ultimate decision-making power regarding fiscal affairs

  • Exclusive power to fix the county tax rate, make appropriations to be paid from county treasury

  • Adopts annual budget, incurs county indebtedness, and appropriates additional funds after the budget is adopted

  • Determines proper policy and sets priorities for allocation and expenditure of county funds

  • Reappropriates surplus funds, transfers balances in dormant funds to general fund

  • Establishes salaries, wages, per diems, and all other compensation for county officers, deputies, assistants, and employees that are payable from the county fund

  • Authorizes purchases or sales of county owned land

  • Levies taxes to provide funds for jails

  • Furnishes financial assistance to local community centers

Desired Qualifications (not required)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

  • Experience running meetings, managing budgets, and setting policy

  • Strong public speaking, verbal, and written communication skills

Compensation

  • Shared only with serious candidates

  • Elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits
