Job Overview

  • The County Sheriff is an elected full-time position

  • Offices are located in the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department

  • Fixed term of four (4) years, for eight (8) out of twelve (12) years

Job Requirements

  • Must be and remain a current resident of Hancock County

  • Must not have any prior felony convictions

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for community law enforcement

  • Manages the county jail and any confined within the county

  • Administers work release programs

  • Services as an officer of the courts

  • Delivers service of warrants, subpoenas, and other forms of process

  • Appoints Sheriff deputies

  • May collect delinquent tax or place levies on property when warrants are issued

  • Coordinates responses for 911 emergency calls

  • Supervises about 95 full-time staff and reserve members

Desired Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Bachelors Degree preferred

  • Should be in good physical and mental shape

  • 5+years experience in law enforcement with proven record of promotions

  • 5+ years hiring, managing, supervising, and leading staff and other supervisors

Compensation

  • $120,910 annual salary in 2020, $4,650.38 bi-weekly, plus benefits

  • Elected officials do not qualify for unemployment benefits
